Measures the body’s Total Testosterone, Free Testosterone, Bioavailable Testosterone, Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) and Albumin.
Testosterone is a hormone essential to the health and wellbeing of both sexes although in much higher levels in men. Low levels are often associated with low libido, muscle and strength loss, fat gain, erectile dysfunction and memory and energy issues. Low levels may indicate pituitary issues, Klinefelter, Kallman and Prader-Willi syndrome or testicular malfunction. Various diseases, testicular injury and medications can also cause low levels. Increased high levels may indicate tumors, hyperthyroidism and ovarian and adrenal issues in women.
This test also includes SHBG measurements. SHBG is a hormone that binds sex hormones, particularly testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol. What is bound is carried through the blood in inactive form. What isn’t bound is free and usable by the body. High levels of SHBG in men may result in low free testosterone levels. Low levels of SHBG in women may result in high free testosterone levels.
This test also includes an Albumin measurement. Albumin is a liver derived protein and aids in transporting fatty acids and hormones throughout the body among other functions. Low levels may indicate nephrotic syndrome, heart failure, liver disease or inadequate protein consumption. Levels may be elevated in cased of dehydration.
