Measures the amount of sodium in the body.
This test is used to detect abnormal or inadequate levels of sodium in the body. This test is commonly ordered in conjunction with other electrolyte panels.
Low levels of sodium may indicate excess water intake, water retention, edema or excess sodium loss. Severe sodium deficiencies may lead to brain fog and fatigue; extreme cases (rare) may lead to coma if levels fall rapidly and dramatically.
High levels of sodium may indicate dehydration or excess sodium intake. Certain drugs and medications may also increase sodium levels moderately to significantly.
