Used to indicate the cause of elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
The Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) test is useful in helping to determine if liver disease exist. It is often ordered with other liver function tests. Elevated levels of GGT may indicate liver damage. Common causes may include cirrhosis, hepatitis or liver disease. Alcohol abuse is also a common cause as well as the use of liver toxic drugs. Those who suffer from congestive heart failure, pancreatitis or diabetes may be at increased risk.
